FarmVille Pic of the Day: Joelr's Floating Farm Illusion is king of the hill

Click the image to make it larger.

FarmVille landscape designer Joelr is literally king of the hill and top of the heap, thanks to his "Floating Uphill illusion [sic]" farm. With all the awesome 3D looking farms out there, it's easy to forget that what you see is actually flat, and that it takes a lot of creativity and imagination to pull off any kind of depth in these landscapes.

Central to Joelr's bag of tricks is clever positioning. The "shadow" that allows the top of his hill to float is obviously made of black hay bales.The illusion of rounded hillsides is created by putting all the farm plots on a diagonal. Basically, you put one down and keep scooting each one a bit more over than the previous one. When you get enough of these off-kilter, the edges start to appear curved. To give the effect even more of a boost, the fences bordering the hillsides are 'stacked' higher on the top than on the bottom, while the bottom has more pieces. (Remember, there is no real stacking on FarmVille!)

It's all about layers, people -- basic visual engineering. In fact, methods such as this are great, because you can use the same techniques over and over again. There are no fancy items here, aside for decorative purposes. I'd like to see someone rework this so that it looks like a giant UFO saucer beaming up cows.

BONUS: Check out this interview to learn more about Joelr and the creation of this farm.

Are you impressed? Because we certainly are. What else do you think would work for a floating hill illusion? Sound off in the comments. 2 Comments

CityVille Ride the Rapids Timed Goal: Everything you need to know

A new timed goal has launched in CityVille, that sees Paul hoping to enjoy one last outing in the summer heat by taking a ride on the rapids. Of course, the goal is called "Ride the Rapids," and it comes with just a 24 hour time limit, if you're looking for the biggest (and best) prizes.

Before Paul can take off on his adventure, you'll need to help him prepare by gathering quite a few ingredients. Luckily, these three tasks do seem doable in the 24 hour time period, at least more so than others that require you to grow crops.

Get 8 Paddles
Visit 15 Unique Neighbors
Collect from 80 Businesses

It doesn't seem to matter how many businesses you collect from repeatedly, so if I were you, I'd simply collect from some of the least profitable businesses tons of time to reach the 80 businesses total quicker. As for the paddles, they're earned via a general news post on your wall that any of your friends can respond to.

If you complete these three tasks within 24 hours, you'll receive the Gold Trophy, 2,300 coins, 1,100 Goods and 48 XP. For finishing after the first 24 hours, but within 72 hours of starting this goal, you'll earn the Silver Trophy, 2,300 coins and 1,100 Goods, but no experience points. Finally, if you finish these tasks at any point after the first 72 hours have passed, you'll receive 1,100 Goods. Either way, you'll receive plenty of Goods to pay you back for the Goods you spent in completing these tasks, so it isn't all bad.

There doesn't look to be a time limit for how long you'll have to accept this goal, so feel free to finish some other projects in your city before tackling it, if it makes you feel better.

What do you think of the Ride the Rapids Timed Goal? Is it the easiest timed goal yet, or the hardest? Sound off in the comments.

FarmVille: Lighthouse Cove crafting recipes show up in Pubs

While we already knew that Lighthouse Cove will be launching in FarmVille "soon," the exact release date hasn't been announced. That "soon" however, looks to be incredibly so, as new Crafting Recipes, dealing with unreleased Lighthouse Cove crops have started appearing in the currently accessible crafting buildings.

As two particular examples, if you travel to the English Countryside and look into your Pub, you'll see Blackberry Brandy and Potato Soup, two recipes that require unreleased crops: the Darrow Blackberries and Kennebec Potatoes, respectively. Now, while this might make you think that these two crops will just be released in the English Countryside instead, let's not forget that these two crops were first spotted in a whole slew of Mastery Signs dealing with what was then known as the New Hampshire farm, which was then officially announced to be Lighthouse Cove.

While that still doesn't explain how these recipes ended up inside these Crafting Cottages (heck, it could be that they will come to the English Countryside instead, although that's highly unlikely at this point), it could simply be a test by Zynga, or a quiet released sneak peek for those who are paying close attention. Either way, we'll make sure to let you know when these crops officially release, and where you can craft these new recipes, as soon as they launch.

Do you have any other unreleased crop crafting recipes hiding away in your Crafting Cottages? What are they? Let us know in the comments.

Playfish says goodbye to Hotel City, My Empire and four more games

Playfish games shut down
The Sims Social might have dethroned the mighty FarmVille, but its success may have cut into Playfish's other Facebook games and sent them to a speedier doom, too. On August 30th, the word went out in the official Playfish forums that Hotel City, My Empire, Who Has The Biggest Brain?, Geo Challenge, Word Challenge and Bowling Buddies will be getting axed Sept. 30.

We used to cover Hotel City back in the day (the game first launched on March 26, 2010) and can remember when it was a big deal. The game was well made and had once held an all-time high of 13 million monthly players and 3 million daily players. Right now, it's at 1.4 million monthly players and about 100,000 dailies, ranking it the 9th most-played Playfish and EA game on Facebook. But it's clear that won't be enough to save it.

Hotel City's popularity is followed closely by Bowling Buddies, Word Challenge, then Geo Challenge. Finally, far beneath them all on the social games ladder are Who Has The Biggest Brain? and My Empire. Though, at least one player suspects it may not be all about numbers, because Country Story currently ranks 10th behind Hotel City. But there's been no announcement to shut it down (yet).

Are you going to miss any of these Playfish games? Care to start a betting pool on the death of Country Story? Sound off in the comments. 1 Comment

FarmVille: Lighthouse Cove takes over the travel screen [UPDATE]

UPDATE: Apparently, my "week" prediction was even too long, as users on the FarmVille forums have reported gaining access for 55 Farm Cash. If this turns out to be legitimate, we'll make sure to give you a complete rundown of how you too can access Lighthouse Cove as soon as possible. Check out our complete guide to getting early access into Lighthouse Cove (and what you can expect once your boat hits shore) right here.

If there wasn't already enough indication that Lighthouse Cove will be launching in FarmVille very, very soon, there's this. The game's travel screen animation has been blown up and replaced with this massive banner (again, it's animated, with the boat riding the waves), showing us a bit of Lighthouse Cove in the distance (well, the Lighthouse and some grass, anyway). We already know that we'll be traveling to Lighthouse Cove via boat, so this will likely be the sight we'll see when traveling for quite a while.

Does this matter? Yes, it most certainly does, as it gives us a better time table of when to expect the launch of this third farm (and when we'll apparently need to shell out 45 Farm Cash to travel there). After the launch of new crafting recipes in-game that deal with unreleased crops that (we can only assume) are part of Lighthouse Cove, and after the many teaser images Zynga has laid out for us over the last week or so, I'd wager some pretty serious (virtual) money that we'll be seeing Lighthouse Cove launch within the next week - two at most.

The FarmVille team doesn't normally release this much in-game content weeks or months before that content is ready (aside from screenshots that may be posted on Facebook fan pages, which, again, isn't live in the game), so I'd grab some Farm Cash, people. It looks like we'll be heading off to Lighthouse Cove a lot sooner than anyone imagined.

Have you spotted any other Lighthouse Cove content in your own game? Are you ready to tackle a third farm, or will you stick with the two you already have for the foreseeable future? Sound off in the comments.

Adventure World Deep Jungle Quests: Everything you need to know

As we've told you before, Zynga's newest Facebook game Adventure World comes with it tons of new maps, taking you through the dense jungles and even through dark and gloomy caves while trying to gain access to the lost city of El Dorado. Early on in the gameplay (via the game's tutorial), you're given the Master Key to opening El Dorado, but are slowed when you realize that before the key will turn, you'll need to find and replace four idols to the surrounding pillars. The first idol is the Monkey Idol, and you'll unlock access to completing this new adventure as soon as you gather three friends to help, along with some supplies in the form of Food, Fuel and Water.

This new adventure takes place in an area known as the Deep Jungle. Just like an Expedition, this Deep Jungle area contains quests within itself (side-quests, if you will) that can also be completed as you go along. Your overall goal, yes, it to collect the Monkey Idol, but there's so much more to it than that. Here's a guide to surviving the Deep Jungle, and coming back with the Monkey Idol in one piece.

Main Quests in the Deep Jungle

Find the Monkey Idol, Part 1

Recover the Monkey Idol

Of course, the Monkey Idol can't just be right as you walk in the door, but is instead on the far side of this massive map. There are plenty of cloud covering your view, traps to disarm and snakes to kill, but if you can continually wait for your energy to recharge, you'll eventually make it to the end to "recover" this Idol. Here's a picture of it for your reference.

Find the Monkey Idol, Part 2

Recover the Idol... Quick!

Ok, so maybe that last idol was fake. And maybe you're now stuck in a pit full of snakes underground, but that's nothing you can't handle, right? As the quest window tells you, the real Monkey Idol is behind the wall in front of you, so clear out the snakes in the pit and use your Master Key on the keyhole in front of you. This cases the wall to drop, revealing the real Monkey Idol!

Find the Monkey Idol, Part 3

Return to Base Camp
Place the Monkey Idol

At this point, you will have completed the main quests for Deep Jungle, but it should be noted that you can click on the first, false Monkey Idol at any time, but will not have a chance to go back and complete the side quests below after that point. Continue only when you feel that you've completed everything you wanted to. Note: If this changes in the future, we'll make sure to let you know.

Deep Jungle Side Quests

Hungry Monkeys!

Harvest 4 Banana Trees
Feed Bananas to 4 Monkeys

Banana Trees tend to be found in the far corners of the map, or in areas that are otherwise hard to get to due to tons of bushes or snakes. Here's a picture of them for your reference.

Gather Rare Flowers

Collect 5 Blue Flowers
Collect 5 Orange Flowers
Collect 5 Pink Flowers

These flowers are scattered throughout the map, so just keep an eye on when clearing bushes or whacking snakes to see if you notice any flowers nearby. You might also need to enter into caves hidden under "Blooming Bushes" to find flowers and the Vases below. Here's the location of two hidden caves (the Ladders are revealed under the Blooming Bushes) for your reference.

Snake Handling

Defeat 5 Bush Snakes
Defeat 5 Quick Snakes
Hire a Friend to Help
Luckily, you can complete all of these tasks on your own, so don't panic about the "hiring a friend" bit. Since you already had to ask for three friends' help before even starting these quests, you'll then see your three friends scattered through the map waiting for you to call on them. Just click on their picture and then click on the "Hire" button that appears. You'll then "take control" of that friend's avatar, and can perform three actions with the tools they currently have in their own game. That is, if they're a much higher level than you, and have upgraded tools, you'll gain the power of those tool for your short time with them in the game. Just hire one friend and you'll complete this task. As for the other two, remember that Quick Snakes are those that roam freely, while Bush Snakes hide inside bushes that shake.

Society Work

Get 5 Jade Vases
Get 3 Red Vases
Get 2 Azure Skulls
Get a Leafy Reinforcement from the Arrowhead Collection

Like in most other maps, we're asked to collect Jade and Red Vases, which are scattered randomly throughout the map. If you don't think they're worth collecting, due to the energy you'll "waste" doing so, keep in mind that collecting these type of items normally give you free energy in return (sometimes more than you spent), so it's definitely worthwhile. As for the Leafy Reinforcement, you can earn it in any Jungle Map at random - so, something like Snake Marsh, for instance. I suppose, then, you could also earn it while going through the Deep Jungle, but I would be surprised if they made it that easy.

With these story-based quests, there's no time limit for completing them, so if you're currently in the middle of an Expedition, feel free to go and complete it before your time runs out instead of rushing through these quests. The Monkey Idol will be waiting for you when you're ready for it, and hopefully you'll have earned some much better tools to help you get there faster. Happy exploring!

FarmVille Sneak Peek: Lighthouse Cove Barn and Garage

If you were starting to doubt just how functional the upcoming Lighthouse Cove farm in FarmVille would be, some of those fears should be put to rest with Zynga's newest teaser image. While this is the same section of the farm that we've seen time and time again (with the mermaid, whale and boat dock), this picture also shows us what's going a bit further to the west, in the form of the farm's barn and garage (the red and blue buildings, respectively).

The text for this teaser image states that we'll be able to "[r]estore the cove, create a thriving restaurant, master your animals and crops and complete the ultimate farming cove experience with the coastal lighthouse!"

Of course, we already brought you details on this restaurant, in that it will be this third farm's Crafting Cottage, but the idea of restoring the cove is an interesting one. Perhaps this will be more like the English Countryside than not, seeing us fix the Barn and Garage using excess building parts, rather than starting them from scratch. Whatever the case, this farmer is incredibly excited to see more, and we'll make sure to let you know all additional details surrounding Lighthouse Cove as we know more.

Do you think we'll have to fix buildings in Lighthouse Cove, or could this "restore" wording deal with repairing the lighthouse or boat dock - things that are unique to this third farm? Speculate with us in the comments!

FarmVille Mystery Game (09/11/11): Aviary animals take flight for one week only

You have to hand it to the FarmVille team at Zynga - when they release a new feature in FarmVille (in this case the Aviary), they are quick to release plenty of animals to fill it. That idea has been carried into this week's Mystery Game, as seven birds are available in the now regular setup of "win all six regular animals, and you'll win a free prize."

To be specific, the six available birds contain those that we gave you a sneak peek of earlier, along with a cute chubby yellow bird that is easily one of the cutest animals I've ever seen in the game. Here's a complete list of the available birds:

Blue Sumatra Rooster
Araucana Chicken
Dabbler Duck
Ancona Duck
Sebastopol Goose
Orpington Chicken

Each dart for this week's game costs 20 Farm Cash, and while you may end up having to pay more than 120 Farm Cash to earn all six of the above birds, if you can complete the collection, you'll receive the Black Necked Swan as a free gift. Actually, the word "free" doesn't really fit here, after all of the Farm Cash you've spent to earn the Swan, but I digress. She'll be there waiting for you, if you want to earn her, but only for one week, when the birds of this Mystery Game will take flight.

What do you think of the birds in this week's Mystery Game? Will you try to earn all of the birds so you can walk away with the Black Necked Swan? Let us know in the comments.

FarmVille Raffle Booth (09/11/11): Orchard and Unwithers top the prize list

In this week's installment of the FarmVille Raffle Booth, we actually see the prize list switched a bit. While some of the most basic prizes remain (Special Delivery Boxes, for one), the top two prizes are fairly useful for FarmVille that enjoy function over style. Here's a full list of this week's available prizes, along with your odds of winning them:

10 Special Delivery Boxes - 1:5
3 Fertilize Alls - 1:20
5 Love Potions - 1:100
3 Unwithers - 1:500
1 Fully Built Orchard - 1:2000

Just to clarify, this Orchard is fully built, making it a 30 Farm Cash value, if you were to purchase this pre-constructed Orchard from the store, rather than building it yourself. Honestly, I've never had the luck of winning anything better than the "worst" two prizes in these Raffles, but hopefully you'll have better luck with walking away with these Unwithers, the Orchard, or both!

As usual, you can earn more Raffle Tickets either by purchasing them for Farm Cash, or by asking your friends to send them to you. You'll also receive a single Raffle Ticket for free to give you at least one chance at winning. Remember, this week's Raffle drawing goes on for just that long - a week. This time next Sunday, a new set of items will be launched in the Raffle, and you'll get to see if you'll walk away empty handed. Good luck!

What do you think of this Orchard being offered as the "grand prize" in this week's raffle? Are the unwithers a better prize, or do you not appreciate either being given away? Sound off in the comments.

FarmVille Animal Sanctuary Items: Melaleuca Tree, Zebra Unicorn, Zoo Lodge and more

Whether you're growing tired of the Animal Sanctuary theme in FarmVille, or if you've been eagerly awaiting more, the market has been updated this evening with even more items in the theme for your shopping (or just browsing) pleasure. There are new animals, trees and more available to choose from, and as usual, we're here to give you a breakdown of each and every item released this evening, so you can make the most educated shopping experiences possible (because, let's face it - that Farm Cash doesn't come cheap).

Trees

Eucalyptus Tree - 7 Farm Cash
Melaleuca Tree - 15 Farm Cash

In this case, the Eucalyptus Tree is the level one tree, allowing you to save those 15 Farm Cash and earn a Melaleuca Tree (or two... or ten) for free via Mystery Seedlings either grown in your own Orchards, or claimed from friends' wall posts. As usual, both of these trees can be mastered, with the first star coming at 75 harvests (each).

Animals

Zebra Unicorn - 30 Farm Cash
Sloth Bear - 12 Farm Cash

Yes, I said it --err, typed it. A unicorn is available with tonight's update, which should make horse and unicorn collectors alike really excited. As with most other unicorns, the price here is pretty high, but I suppose that's the price you pay for a zebra-striped unicorn with a baby blue mane. Also, if you happen to login to your game and see prices that are different from those mentioned and pictured here, keep in mind that Zynga likes to "price test," to see just how high they can price an item and still have users pay the fee. You may have just come across one such test, so don't be alarmed - a single price will be decided upon soon enough, I'm sure.

Buildings

Zoo Lodge - 20 Farm Cash

This building doesn't necessary scream of being perfect for a zoo, but it has the "lodge" portion down. This fairly large building has an angled ceiling with skylights that make it an interesting sight to say the least. You'll receive 2,000 experience points for purchasing one.

Decorations:

Aviary Fence - 5,000 coins
Koala Bear Gnome - 15 Farm Cash
Crocodile Pond - 16 Farm Cash
Hummock Grassland - 10,000 coins

Alright, let's just take a moment to look at how cute the Koala Bear Gnome is - adorable, isn't he? Now that our moment is over, we can get back to the topic at hand: at least there are two coin items here, unlike previous releases, but unless you plan on creating some farm art with these fence tiles, you'll likely not feel that counts. Still, the pieces of Hummock Grassland look really nice next to one another, so if you're looking for a way to change the appearance of a large section of land, and don't mind losing the ability to place anything on top (say, if this land were in a garden or animal pen), feel free to buy them in bulk.

All of these items will be available to purchase from the game's store for the next two weeks. Hopefully, in that time, we'll see even more coin items released in this theme (or even in a new theme), and we'll make sure to let you know if that's the case.

What do you think of tonight's Animal Sanctuary theme update? Are you a fan of decorating your entire farm surrounding a single theme, or do you keep pockets of different themes all around your farm? Sound off in the comments.

Adventure World Snake Marsh Expedition: Everything you need to know

After completing the Treasure Trail expedition in Adventure World, you've hopefully come to understand how the game is played, and how these Expeditions can work in your favor to help you level up and earn coins. For the second Expedition, Snake Marsh, you'll have a single day to make your way through the entire trip, with your possible rewards being a maximum of 445 coins and one Food.

Of course, you'll need to have some goodies before starting this trip, so you'll need to have 50 Supplies, one Food, one Fuel and one Water before you begin. These can be earned either through buildings in your own Base Camp, or by collecting them from buildings in your friends' camps (including the Base Camp of John Allen, the NPC character in your team). Snake Marsh is, you guessed it, full of snakes, and three quests to complete in all. Follow our guide and you'll be able to get through the Marsh in one piece, and with the top rewards.

A Place to Call Home

Plant 3 Rare Orange Flowers
Plant 3 Rare Pink Flowers
Plant 3 Rare Blue Flowers

Apparently, the climate is so great in the Snake Marsh that you're being asked to risk life and limb to plant some exotic flowers in the soil to test how well they'll grow. This is the main goal for the overall Snake Marsh expedition, seeing you traveling from one end of the map to the other, clicking on small mounds of dirt to plant flowers. As this map has a lot of cloud cover (clouds are removed as you explore more areas of the map) and isn't as linear, your best bet would be to start at one end and work your way around the outskirts of the map, clearing out snakes and bushes as you go. In this way, you'll be able to make sure you complete everything possible on this map, if you're into that sort of thing. That is, you could also fly through, just planting the flowers, if you're more into speed rather than completion.

Snake Master

Clear 3 Wiggling Bushes
Defeat 3 Quick Snakes
Get 5 Ruby Vases

Once again, you're asked to collect Ruby Vases, but these are often guarded by Snakes. While we're once again met with the Quick Snakes (of the brown, yellow and orange variety), these kinds of Snakes need a clear path to get to you, allowing you to tackle them only when you really want to. As for the Wiggling Bushes, these let you know that a Snake is hiding inside. Clear the bush and a Snake will appear, normally taking more than one whack to remove.

Dislike Spikes

Clear 10 Bushes
Disarm or Clear the Yellow Spike Traps
Disarm or Clear the Green Spike Traps
Disarm or Clear the Blue Spike Traps

For this quest, we're introduced to traps that are different colors, and the levers themselves don't necessarily have to appear directly next to the trap they control. For instance, the Blue Spike lever is directly north from where you enter this map, but the Blue Spikes themselves are on the far left side of the map. Just be cautious that you don't go into things with low amounts of energy, as you might be surrounded by snakes (which will remove all of your energy just by attacking you), and you'll eventually come through this Expedition in one piece.

As you likely won't be able to finish this expedition in one sitting, remember your time limit: if you don't finish in a single 24 hour period, you will have failed and will likely have to start over from scratch. While you're waiting for your energy to refill, keep checking back with us as we bring you continued coverage on Zynga's newest game. Have fun!

CityVille: Take to the field with new Sports-themed items

I hope you had your fill of the Farm theme in CityVille, as another theme has swooped in to steal the spotlight. To be specific, this new theme has to do with Sports, and there are tons of items available (some for coins, which is a plus) to allow your citizens to spend time in the great outdoors, living a fit and healthy lifestyle. If you purchase one, you'll be guaranteed one of four items: the Half-Pipe House, Red Card Residence, Fencing School or Big Play Brewery. This Mystery Crate will only be available for five days, so you'll need to decide fairly quickly if you want to risk receiving duplicates by purchasing multiple boxes, or if you'll purchase the four items individually.

As you can see, all of these items will be disappearing from the game rather quickly, so if you have any desire for them whatsoever, your best bet would be to purchase them now (even if it's just a few coin decorations), rather than waiting. Why? Well, there are few things worse than forgetting... and then regretting.

Will you purchase any of these Sports themed items before they expire from the store? What sort of theme of items do you hope Zynga releases next? Sound off in the comments.

Cafe World Engagement Party Goals: Everything you need to know

Over the past few weeks, we've been bringing you continued coverage of the proposal saga between Cafe World's Joe and Lisa. In Part Three, we saw Joe finally being able to pop the question, and in what was a surprise to no one - she said yes! Now that the big question has been popped, the saga is still far from over, as there's an Engagement Party to plan, people, and you're just the (wo)man for the job!

As has become routine in new goal series, the dishes listed here are examples, and will likely be different from those you are asked to cook in your own game. Apologies all around, chefs, but there's no way for us to guarantee which dishes you'll have to cook in your own game (trust me, if I could, I would). That being said, here's a complete guide to finishing these goals and planning the perfect engagement party.

A Holly Hello

    * Place the Hostess
    * Serve 12 Kung Pao Stir Fry
    * Collect 7 Table Mints

The Hostess is a new building project that will see you earning bonus Cafe Points for a week after her stand has been constructed. We'll bring you a complete guide to building Holly Hostess's stand just as soon as we can, so keep checking back. You can check out our complete guide to building the Hostess Stand right here.

Engaging Couple

    * Collect 8 Surveys
    * Collect 6 Invitations
    * Serve 12 Blueberry Streusel

You'll need to ask your friends for both the Surveys and the Invitations, so make sure to make those your first steps. That is, you can cook the Blueberry Streusel while you're waiting, knowing that your friends could be responding to your requests at any time.

Invites Away!

    * Collect 8 Cured Ham
    * Serve 20 Creme Fraiche Caviars
    * Serve 12 Tortilla Soup

Regardless of the dishes you're required to cook here (again, these dishes may vary from your own requirements), remember to look in your Gift Box for extra servings to help speed along the process. For finishing this goal, you'll receive the Antipasto recipe.

Early Arrivals

    * Collect 6 Decorative Table Cloths
    * Collect 8 Silver Napkin Holders
    * Serve Antipasto 30 Times

By this point in the goal series, the Engagement Party is actually happening, but guests have started to arrive before you were really ready! You'll need to ask for these final touches to make the tables look great before Joe and Lisa's guests start to eat.

Hey Stranger!

    * Collect 5 Funny Stories
    * Collect 7 Folded Name Cards
    * Master Antipasto to Level 1

Again, these items are themed to the event, and need to be earned by asking your friends to send them to you. You won't earn another recipe for completing this goal, but you will earn a bit of a cutscene in the story, showing off the happy couple at their party.

Strawberry Fields

    * Collect 5 Sliced Almonds
    * Collect 8 Fresh Strawberries
    * Serve Super Chunk Fruit Salad 25 Times

After serving the appetizer (the Antipasto) previously, you've now moved onto the salad course, and for finishing this goal you'll receive a new salad recipe in the form of Strawberry Salad.

Picture Perfect

    * Collect 7 Drink Charms
    * Collect 7 Camera Batteries
    * Serve Apple Cider 18 Times

You'll need the Drink Bar to finish this goal, although it's not clear whether or not this Apple Cider will be permanent across all users, or if it too will vary from user to user.

El Menudo

    * Collect 9 Chili Powder
    * Serve Chips and Guacamole 30 Times
    * Spice 7 Neighbors' Stoves

For your next course, it's time to serve some Menudo, and you'll receive just that - the Menudo dish in your cookbook - for finishing this particular goal. I know we've been going for a while Chefs, but don't give up just yet!

Is This Thing On?

    * Collect 8 Microphones
    * Collect 6 Written Speeches
    * Serve 20 Rootin' Tootin' Rib Eyes

What's a good party without entertainment? Apparently, Lisa and Joe's friends have come up with short speeches about the couple, so you'll need to give them microphones so they can be heard loud and clear (you'll also apparently have to write their speeches for them, which is odd, but I digress).

Maine Course

    * Serve 12 Baklava
    * Master Menudo to Level 1
    * Serve Fruit Punch 16 Times

Unfortunately, we've only made it to the main course here, meaning that there's still plenty of work ahead of you. If you can make it this far, and complete this particular goal, you'll receive another new recipe: His & Her Surf n' Turf.

So Sweet

    * Collect 9 Tubes of Frosting
    * Collect 7 Cupcake Holders
    * Serve Ginger Ale 18 Times

Even though we've moved onto dessert, don't get too excited - this party still has plenty of life left in it, and plenty of work left to be done.

Cupcake Creation

    * Collect 10 Tea Leaves
    * Serve 12 Triple Berry Cheesecakes
    * Serve Gem Cake 12 Times

We're still not to the end of the Engagement Party, but we have at least officially moved onto dessert. For completing this goal, you'll receive the Elegant Cupcakes recipe.

Elegant Goodbye

    * Master Elegant Cupcakes through Level 2
    * Serve Chocolate Cream Pie 20 Times
    * Serve Dark Roast 12 Times

The Coffee Machine is required for the Dark Roast (or whichever coffee drink you're asked to cook in your own game), but after you've dealt with these three tasks, you will have finally (mercifully) reached the end of the Engagement Party, along with its goals.

This is easily one of the longest goal series I can recall ever being released in the game, totaling 13 goals in all. Luckily, the game doesn't say anything about a time limit for these goals, so hopefully a larger chunk of players will have a chance to finish them (posted time limit or not, I don't expect them to be "permanent"). With the continuation of this particular story, it only makes sense that the next step will be the actual wedding (or, if Zynga really wants to draw this out, we could also see Bachelor / Bachelorette parties, along with a Bridal Shower for Lisa). Whatever comes next, we'll make sure let you know.

What do you think of these Engagement Party goals? Are you happy seeing such a long goal series that really gives you something to sink your teeth into, or would you prefer the goal series to be shorter? Sound off in the comments.

Cafe World Holly Hostess Stand: Everything you need to know

Earlier tonight, we brought you a complete rundown of the many (many) goals in the Cafe World Engagement Party goal series, which sees Joe and Lisa celebrating their new engagement with friends. Of course, any party with this many guests needs someone to organize the arrivals, which is where Holly Hostess comes into the game. Holly heard about the engagement party we'd be throwing for the couple in our cafes, and has dropped by to help out. Of course, you can't expect this to be a simple affair, as you'll need to first build Holly's Hostess Station so she has a place to stand and work.

This is done by collecting a series of building materials or tools that Holly needs to work. You'll need five Highlighters, six Podium Lamps, seven Toothpicks and seven Table Charts. The Highlighters and Toothpicks are earned through general news feed posts, while the Podium Lamps and Table Charts are earned through individual gift requests sent to your friends.

Once you're done building the Hostess Station for Holly, you'll receive a 20% bonus on all Cafe Points earned in your cafe through cooking and serving dishes. However, this bonus isn't permanent, as it will only last for a single week. After that point, you'll need to use Energy Drinks to "recharge her" as she's become tired. These Energy Drinks can be purchased for Cafe Cash, as you might expect. Should you wish not to recharge her (which is your choice), you can either store the Hostess Stand in case the development team decides to create another use for her, or just use her as a decoration in your cafe.

What do you think of the Holly Hostess Stand / bonus in Cafe World? Will you use Cafe Cash to keep Holly constantly "energized" and ready to work? Sound off in the comments.

CloudForest Expedition Sneak Peek: You're gonna have a rough landing

When we last heard word of Cloudforest Expedition, it was but a glint in legendary designer John Romero's eye. Well, that and a Facebook page chock full of little tidbits detailing the game, which is still in development at Romero's new social game studio, Loot Drop. Now, we've been granted access to some high resolution images of the game in action, and frankly, it's looking downright stunning.

In Cloudforest Expedition, players are on a search for their missing grandfather, which for whatever reason leads them to a jungle teeming with wildlife, ancient artifacts and strange tribes of natives. The images we have here seem to imply that you'll crash land in Cloudforest, left to your own devices to figure just what happened to your grandfather.

It seems that you'll encounter a normal (enough) looking jungle landscape in which either you or your grandfather landed in Cloudforest. From there, you will meet some colorful tribesman that appear to worship fire and dwell on a volcanic landscape. During your travels, you'll also come across other travelers or teammates, it seems, that we imagine will help you somehow navigate Cloudforest (and we assume will help you set up camp in various locations).

Gallery: Cloudforest Expedition on Facebook
We also know that players will get to choose between two avatars: a red-headed woman who seems to be channeling Lara Croft (and has a certain affinity for lemurs), and a roguish-looking man that's a cross between Rambo and Bear Grylls. To find out more about Cloudforest Expedition ahead of its Fall release, "Like" its Facebook page right here, and check out the rest of these images in the gallery.

Are you psyched for Cloudforest Expedition's upcoming release? What do you think/hope we're to expect from the game once it launches? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment

Zynga hits Warstorm, three other games with the firey axe Sept. 30

A fiery axe laced with sadness and destruction, at that. Mafia Wars Maniac reports that Zynga, the creator of some of the most popular games on Facebook, will close Warstorm for good come Sept. 30 along with Scramble, Pathwords and Word Twist. In fact, Warstorm isn't even accepting new players anymore during its final breaths on Facebook. The news broke in a post by Warstorm forum moderator Cerulean Master, asking players to ring out Warstorm with a bang by sharing their memories.

Luckily, Cerulean also provided a FAQ to help us understand just what's up. The existing 11,126 (yikes!) daily Warstorm players can access the game right until it closes forever on Sept. 30, while new players simply won't be allowed. And for players who paid good money to enjoy their fantasy card battles, Zynga will transfer any virtual currency purchases made within the last 90 days to a game of their choice, and the company will add another 10 percent to that number.

Warstorm refugees will also be offered bonus packages for joining Zynga's better more popular games like CityVille, FarmVille and Empires & Allies. While this information pertains specifically to Warstorm, we imagine that players of Scramble, Word Twist and Pathwords will be offered the same treatment. (Zynga's forums are under maintenance as of this writing.)

Honestly, and no offense to you super fans out there, we can see why Zynga would close games that are dwarfed by its hits. (Not to mention that Words With Friends has become the defacto word game on Facebook.) This will be the second closure in just over a month. Near the end of August, Zynga closed the digital doors to Fashion Wars and two other games that were performing poorly. And not just poorly for a Zynga game--any Facebook game.

If anything, these closures will allow Zynga to focus more resources on making sure its flagship games continue to succeed and to make more money machines popular games. It's a shame to see these games go (I thought Warstorm was quite impressive, personally), but at least the company is providing players with options to stick around. Perhaps as Zynga trims the fat, we'll see even better games come from the international studio, like Adventure World.

Are you sad to see Warstorm and these other Zynga games go? Are you satisfied with how the company is addressing the time you spent in these games? Sound off in the comments. 33 Comments

Noah's Ark hits Port Facebook, social games go crazy for Christians

When Sean Ryan said that Christians were an untapped audience for Facebook games, developers listened. And thus, we have the third biblical Facebook game to hit in the past two months: Noah's Ark.

VentureBeat reports that Making Fun--News Corp's social gaming arm--and Detonator Games have officially released the game to Facebook. However, the FarmVille-meets-Genesis social game looks have hit the platform earlier in August, according to its fan page.

Noah's Ark is the second game launched by Making Fun since it was acquired by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp last year, and looks to cater to a woefully untapped audience that happens to be one of Facebook's largest. The game tasks players with creating--you guessed it--a farm of sorts to attract new animals to Noah's build site. Then, players must build their own Ark to prepare for the imminent worldwide flood.

Of course, players are governed by Energy and can buy boosts and other items with Facebook Credits. Noah's Ark will also test your knowledge of the story through trivia questions provided by Zondervan, a Christian publisher and News Corp subsidiary. (Finally, that Catholic education comes in handy!) And regardless of whether the game takes off--it sits now at over 260,000 monthly players and is growing steadily--Making Fun is committed to releasing games regularly.

Noah's Ark gameplay
"It's part of our plan to bring new and different games to the market that no one else is doing," Making Fun CEO John Welch told VentureBeat. "Our aim is to put out really high-quality titles in partnership with a variety of developers." Welch also said that the publisher will continue to release games through outside developers like Detonator Games, and that includes iPhone games, one of which will be a sports game.

Noah's Ark plays much like the FarmVilles and FrontierVilles of yore, but with a far smoother presentation and an interesting end goal: The Ark. As players gather new animals and materials, they will contribute to building the Ark throughout 10 stages. And there is an unbelievable amount of animals to collect across seven wildlife habitats. As players reach out beyond the limits of their small farmland, which is all visible on screen--but grayed out--they will learn how to attract new animals.

The game is a bit too biblically-charged for my tastes, and it doesn't do quite enough to differentiate itself from the "FarmVille meets the Bible" comparisons. Regardless, kudos to Making Fun and Detonator Games for exploring a relatively new subject matter in Facebook games. And considering 42 percent of Facebook users are Christian, the audience is certainly there.

Habbo Hotel maker names ex-Playdom exec CEO in social games push

You might have heard of the mega popular social network slash social game Habbo Hotel (pictured), but Finnish developer Sulake wants to turn "might" into "absolutely." The company just announced that it has hired former Playdom VP of global distribution Paul LaFontaine as CEO, Reuters reports. Sulake made the hire in an ambitious attempt to help the company break into the world of social gaming, and who would know the space better than a guy who was there from the beginning?

LaFontaine, who was largely responsible for publishing Playdom's--now owned by entertainment behemoth Disney--games will replace Timo Soininen as CEO of Sulake. "We have been turning that direction for two years and are now accelerating it with this new CEO," Sulake chairman Mika Salmi told Reuters.

Habbo Hotel, for the uninformed, is a social network-meets-social game in which about 10 million monthly visitors interact in a world designed to hearken back to the good old days of 8-bit gaming. Players create their own rooms in collective hotels normally restricted to countries of origin or native language, and play mini games, decorate and share gifts with other hotel denizens. Of course, like any social game, players can buy premium items using real money.

Judging from the fact that prospective players can already connect to Habbo Hotel through Facebook Connect, and that Sulake has made their interest in traditional social games clear, Sulake making games for Facebook is certainly a possibility. Alright, with the crazy money everyone seems to be raking in on Facebook, this is most likely exactly where the company is headed. And LaFontaine will lead the charge--watch out, Zynga and EA, Habbo is looking hinder your hottest games.

Have you ever played Habbo Hotel before--what do you think of it? Do you think Sulake and Habbo Hotel will make waves in the Facebook gaming world with LaFontaine? Sound off in the comments. 2 Comments

Amazon gets serious about social games, calls out for developers

The Facebook gaming arena is about to welcome a new gladiator: Amazon. The household name of online retailers (and e-readers) is officially pulling out all the stops for its inevitable entrance into the space, openly and internally calling out for a team of designers and developers.

Since taking on veteran tabletop RPG (roleplaying game) designer Jonathan Tweet for a mysterious project, Reuters reports that signs have appeared in the kitchen of Amazon's Seattle campus that unveil a "Social Games Group." A poster in the kitchen area of the office reads, "The Group is growing fast! We're actively looking," according to Reuters.

It seems that Amazon is primarily looking for software engineers and Flash developers, most likely referring to Adobe Flash, the software through which almost all Facebook games are created. Amazon has reportedly been eying up social gaming since May of this year, calling out for senior level game designers.

Since Amazon hired Tweet for a mysterious project, that's all we knew about the upcoming social games effort from the company. Unfortunately, we still know very little, which leaves us with wild speculation (how lovely). While Amazon is looking strictly for software engineers and Flash developers, we have a feeling this project will be much larger than just pumping out a few games.

Amazon didn't become one of the largest Internet companies in the world without thinking big, so who's to say the company doesn't have equally lofty ambitions for its social gaming efforts? I mean, this is a company has enjoyed success and ubiquity that even the biggest name in social gaming aspires to. That said, it's entirely possible that Amazon looks to create a platform of its very own, complete with games developed in house. Call that an educated guess, or my wild dreams of slaying dragons attached to awesome deals on otherwise pricey cell phone cases and magazine subscriptions.

GameStop sees the (iPhone back)light, will sell iOS devices [Rumor]

First Facebook, and now ... iPads? According to 9to5 Mac, the ubiquitous, brick-and-mortar games retailer plans to sell iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. The website cites several anonymous sources that say the announcement was made at the company's annual private trade show in Las Vegas last week. And if you think that it's all poppycock, check out the below image that 9to5 Mac found, detailing the fact that GameStop will soon accept trade-ins of old iPhones, iPods and iPads in its stores.

Since that news was revealed earlier, the website guesses that GameStop looks to stock up on its trade-ins of these devices before offering the new models such as the imminent iPhone 5 (4S ... 4G?). Of course, this wouldn't be a terrible idea. Mobile gaming is in a renaissance of sorts at the moment, with everyone wanting a piece of that pie and putting their best foot forward to break out in a big way in the space.

With a storefront on Facebook and now reportedly embracing the mobile gaming revolution, GameStop appears to realize (finally) that it needs to adapt to the changing games industry. As a forewarning, however: If you're going to buy an iPad or iPhone from GameStop, make sure to buy it new--this is complex hardware we're talking about here. (And have you seen those used consoles the stores offer? I'll pass.)

Facebook Credits enter Asia, but what about Zynga Game Cards?

Now, it will be even easier for folks in southern Asia to waste money on buy virtual items in their favorite Facebook games. Facebook Credits, the platform's dominant currency, will enter several Asian markets through MOL, Asia's Internet services payment provider with over 600,000 locations.

The strategic partnership allows Asian Facebook gamers to purchase Facebook Credits online through MOLPoints, or what becomes of users' money when purchased, through a new MOLPoints application on Facebook. "MOL is committed to ensure that our consumers are able to acquire virtual currency for their digital lifestyle with safety and ease and we believe that this strong partnership with Facebook will continue MOL's momentum to provide highly effective monetization solutions for the social web." said MOL CEO Ganesh Kumar Bangah in a statement.

MOL says that it puts no surcharges on its MOLPoint transactions, which are conducted over a secure payment gateway. That's all well and good, but didn't Zynga just enter the same territory a few months back with the exact same company? Indeed, so what could this mean for the company's Game Cards? Judging from the wording in MOL's release (and the step-by-step guide on its website), this service will be online only.

This means that Zynga Game Cards would still be the go-to option for low-income families in Asia that can only buy in-game content with cash. Regardless, the news speaks volumes to the fact that Facebook gaming is huge in more places than just the U.S., Europe and Japan. And the social gaming scene can only grow from here.

Do you think southern Asia could become a power player in the social games world? And who do you think will gain dominance in the region: Zynga, DeNA, Gree ... or someone else? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

Pro Tips:

    * Use your hint sparingly because you don't get them often. Save it for the hardest hidden object.
    * Don't get frustrated. The more you play, the faster you'll be able to spot items. Also, you'll remember where some previous objects are hidden.
    * A common rookie mistake is visualizing a very specific version of what the object in question looks like. For example, if you're looking for a grasshopper, don't look specifically for a green grasshopper in a certain pose. Open your mind and instead look for a more general version of your grasshopper. Who knows, the grasshopper might end up being mid-flight and brown, and you'll have been searching for something totally different!

These Pioneer Trail Animal Mastery requirements look a tad ... crazy

Seriously, do you think you're going to tend to ... over 18,170 Badgers anytime soon? We didn't think so. Zynga recently released Animal Mastery to The Pioneer Trail in a big way. The new game component has its very own feature window and a complete set of lofty, challenging Goals.

However, what we didn't know was exactly how many of each animal we'd have to tend to before reaching Mastery milestones. Until now.

Thanks to FrontierVille Info, we now know how many times we'll be a tendin' to these creatures, and it's a lot. Like, in the tens of thousands "a lot." Check it out below along with the animal rewards that await you:

Sheep
Sheep Mastery
Sheep Journeyman: Tend 270 Sheep. Reward: 1,000 XP and Moflon Sheep
Sheep Expert: Tend 1090 Sheep. Reward: 2,000 XP Golden Sheep
Sheep Master: Tend 3,450 Sheep. Reward: 3,000 XP, Sheep Mastery Sign and Ram

Cows
Cow Mastery
Cow Journeyman: Tend 1,200 Cows. Reward: 1,000 XP and Belted Cow
Cow Expert: Tend 4,839 Cows. Reward: 2,000 XP and Holstein Cow
Cow Master: Tend 15,500 Cows. Reward: 3,000 XP and Big Buff Bull

Pigs
Pig Mastery
Pig Journeyman: Tend 750 Pigs. Reward: 1,000 XP and Spotted Pig
Pig Expert: Tend 2,950 Pigs. Reward: 2,000 XP and Giant Hog
Pig Master: 8,450 Pigs. Reward: 3,000 XP and Boar

Chicken
Chicken Mastery
Chicken Journeyman: Tend 80 chicken. Reward: 1,000 XP and Rhode Island Red
Chicken Expert: Tend 340 chicken. Reward: 2,000 XP and Speckled Sussex
Chicken Master: Tend 9450 chicken. Reward: 3,000 XP, Chicken Mastery Sign and Rooster

Moose
Moose Mastery
Moose Journeyman: Tend 190 Moose. Reward: 1,000 XP and Black Moose
Moose Expert: Tend 6,000 Moose. Reward: 2,000 XP and Red Moose
Moose Master: Tend 18,000 Moose. 3,000 XP and Elk

Badgers
Badger Mastery
Badger Journeyman: Tend 1,700 Badgers. Reward: 1,000 XP and Golden Badger
Badger Expert: Tend 5,900 Badgers. Reward: 2000 XP and Honey Badger
Badger Master: Tend 18,170 Badgers: Reward: 3000 XP and Red Panda

The rewards for each of these Mastery endeavors also unlocks those animals in the Market on your homestead. Regardless, I don't know that makes tending to over 18,000 Badgers any more worth the effort. FrontierVille Info hopes that some of these numbers get bumped down, while we just hope those new animals are made attainable at least by the end of 2011.

FarmVille Pic of the Day: Thesupersandy's farm wins with a three-in-a-row

farmville featured tic tac toe farmToday's FarmVille featured farm is a creative design by FarmVille Forums' Thesupersandy. I've seen a lot of farms in my time: hedge maze farms, Lady Gaga farms, and even island resort farms. But, somehow I've never seen the relatively simple tic-tac-toe farm before, and I think it's pretty neat.

Even though whoever was playing 'O's was silly to lose in that situation, the farm itself is very pleasant in appearance. Its mix of orchards, crops, and animals out on the English countryside, allow us to overlook the design's simplicity and flaws. Last week's farm had somewhat of the same effect. It was very simple and spacious, giving it a very appealing, relaxed look. Zynga seems to agree, because they named Thesupersandy's tic-tac-toe design the Farm of the Week. Keep up the good work Thesupersandy!

What do you think of this tic-tac-toe farm?

If you have an AWESOME FarmVille farm that you want to see featured on Games.com, please email a picture to editors@games.com, Include a few words about the inspiration for your design and maybe a few tips for people who need an assist!
